Curious about how I test products and write reviews? Here's a look at what goes on behind the scenes.
1. A package shows up on my doorstep. The products that I review come from three main sources: manufacturers, retailers, and personal purchases. Manufacturers and retailers often send their products as review units (a product on loan) or as samples (which are not returned after the review has been completed). I do my best to review products from all sources objectively, whether I buy it myself or have it on short-term loan.
2. I test the product by fully integrating it into my daily life. Let's use a smartphone review as an example. I set aside my personal cell phone and use the review smartphone exclusively. I make calls, browse the web, send e-mails, take pictures, play Fruit Ninja on it.... You get the idea. This hands-on time informs me on this particular model's battery life, performance, call quality, etc.
3. Finally, I photograph the product for illustration and write the review. I do my best to cover all major purchase considerations such as design, performance, battery life (if applicable), ease of use, and price. Now readers have the information they need to make an informed buying decision.
