Nest reinvents boring appliances that we never get excited about or even give a second thought to. First, they reinvented the thermostat. Now, they redesigned the smoke and carbon monoxide detector. Nest aims to improve the smoke and carbon dioxide detector by improving the way it communicates you. If the fire alarm is set off by a false positive, a waved hand can silence it. Via a Wi-Fi connection, it sends notifications to your smartphone or tablet if the batteries are low or there is CO or fire alert. The Protect notifies you with an alarm and a human voice telling you what the problem is and where it is located. Two or more Protect alarms in a house connect and broadcast the alarm.
The Nest Protect is available for $129 from Nest.
